Giving back

There are a lot of things that make me a happy person. One of them is volunteering. Last night, nine students volunteered to hand out 10,000 candy bars to fans attending the Minnesota Twins game versus the Chicago White Sox. They were energetic and happy and I was so proud to be able to say that I get to work with them.

Have you volunteered lately? If so, what did you do?

  1. I just finished a stint with Americorps here in Connecticut. People always say you get paid when you 'work' for Americorps but the truth is is that I got less then $300 a month for over 30 hours a week of work so...I count it as volunteering! Anyway, I worked for them for 8 months teaching kids in a really low income area how to have healthy relationships. Confusing sounding, no?? I really loved working with the kids, however. Most of the time they didn't want to listen and they drove me crazy but the few times when they actually needed advise or had a question, I felt like I was finally doing something worth while, right?? Volunteering is a great thing!

  2. I regularly volunteer at a Hospice house in town. I first started doing it as something for school and now I find that it is something I truly love. There is something special about talking with someone who knows they are going to die soon; watching how everyone has their journey to take and how they find their peace in the end.
